Do we need a car?

We are getting the ferry to Boulogne for an overnight stay and I was wondering whether we need a car or can we get around ok on foot/public transport?

Also I heard it%26#39;s not a good time to go to France over the May bank holiday is that correct?

What do you hoping to see or do?

I guess if you are just going for one night, you will be able to manage without a car, as with the Castle etc, there should be enough within Boulogne to entertain you for a day or so.

I don%26#39;t know how good the public transport is, but perhaps these sites can help:

You don%26#39;t say when you are going, NK10, nor what days of the week.

8 and 12 May 2008 are public holidays, so shops and and some of the visitor attractions will be closed on those days.

If you have one of those days in your stay, then pick things that will definitely be open, such as Nausicaa (aquarium) on the seafront, or the Chateau Musee in the old (upper) town (though this last is closed on Tuesdays).

Still in the old town, the cathedral is open daily 9-6 excelt lunchtime; its interesting crypt is open 2-5pm (but closed Monday).

If you%26#39;re there on Wed, Sat or Sun, and are OK climbing steps, I highly recommend the Maison de la Beuriere - a fishermen%26#39;s cottage on a steep (really - it%26#39;s a sort of staircase) street near Nausicaa; open 10-12 and 2-5. You get a good insight into how the fishermen and their families lived.

Another curiosity is house of the Liberator of Argentina, San Martin. (Closed Monday and bank holidays, otherwise 10-12 and 2-6.) This great general drove the Spoanish out of Argentina in 1816, and then marched over the Andes and drove them from Chile and Peru. He then decided to live in exile in France, ending his days at this house in Boulogne in 1850.

Most shopping streets are in the modern lower town, near the water. Quainter shops and little restaurants are in the old (upper) town.

There%26#39;s an excellent market in Place Dalton on Wed and Sat mornings.

If you remain within Boulogne, you can easily walk everywhere.

Bonne visite!
