I have one week at the end of August to take a relaxing vacation before starting a very, VERY stressful job, so I am mainly looking for beautiful beaches and maybe one day of sightseeing thrown in for good measure. I have it narrowed down to:
GREEK ISLANDS: I would either take easycruise (because it seems like the most laid back - I can spend full days and nights on the islands), or figure out the ferries, perhaps to two islands (at most three).
OR
FRENCH RIVIERA: Ideally, I%26#39;d rent a car and see perhaps two towns (Nice and Cannes?), perhaps also a small village that isn%26#39;t on the coast, and of course drive to Monaco, if not to spend a night then at least to see it.
Which sounds better? I simply can%26#39;t decide!

I think Greece might be too hot in August; scorchingly, swelteringly, heat strokedly hot. I think you would have more access to AC in the South of France, and probably more managable weather.
for a truely relaxing week, you might want to consider a nice place in the South of France where you can relax, walk everywhere, and not need a car (St Tropez? Nice?). stay put - don%26#39;t change hotels.
have you *really* checked out easycruise?! this isn%26#39;t what I%26#39;d consider a relaxing trip - you might want to re-think the cruise line and consider Windstar cruises, Sea Dream Yacht Club, or something that has an idea of service, good food, and can actually provide an relaxing experience. in particular, there is no dressing or formal stuff on Windstar or Sea Dream - and you might be able to get some great discounted deals...
anyhow, good luck with your trip and best of success with your new job.

Easycruise are the ones with the bright orange boat, yes? You couldn%26#39;t pay me enough. : S
Go to France. The eastern end of Provence is very busy and congested in August, you might be better off staying in Arlex, Aix or the Luberon (inland) or Cassis or Hyeres (on the coast). Monaco is horrible, a concrete jungle and nobody who%26#39;s been there would suggest it for a visit. If DO you want to see the riviera, and nothing else will do, stay in Beaulieu or Villefranche and take trips to Nice, Eze, St Paul de Vence, Entrevaux and Cap Ferrat. Monaco if you really must but ten minutes will be enough so have plans for the rest of the day. Would advise you don%26#39;t rent a car if you go to the eastern end as the traffic said to be awful in August. For the western end you%26#39;d need a car.
Come back if you want to know more!
Enjoy.

Have to agree that EasyCruise does not fall within the category of laid back or relaxing by my definition :)
The Riviera will also be very busy and far from relaxing at the end of August. Car hire will only add to the stress.
Perhaps look at Corsica if you want something French or Cephalonia in Greece?
Either way I would recommend staying put in one place if you%26#39;ve only got a week and want to relax.

I wouldn%26#39;t rule out all of Greece in August, but this is a Provence/France forum so you already know our preferences... :)
If I wanted a week to relax, veg out on a beautiful beach or two, enjoy fine food, sample a few cooling rosé wines and stroll around to a few sights, I would consider: 2 days of relaxation on the island of Porquerolles by Hyeres (very good beaches, even if August gets busy), 3 days moving east by Gigaro (good beach-side strolls), a day in St Tropez, with a visit inland to Grimaud or La Garde Freinet.
Nice is great - vibrant towns, lots to visit, but it may not be the %26quot;relax on a fine sandy beach%26quot; you%26#39;re seeking. Cannes and Monaco are more on the glamorous side.
Enjoy!
