I am looking to get the ferry to Calais over a 4 day weekend, and would appreicate any help or advice on where to visit, or what route to take to explore the pretty scenic areas around. Any help or info about where to stay would be much appreicated.

Many thanks,

- The Boulonnais area, directly east of Boulogne, is very pretty, full of hills and valleys.

- The D940 coast road from Boulogne to Calais (and vice versa) is magnificent; try and choose a clear day and you will see the white cliffs of England looking very close! Along here are Cap Gris Nez (where the Channel swimmers make for), and Cap Blanc Nez.

- Some picturesque walled towns include Gravelines and Bergues, both near Dunkerque; and Montreuil which is just SE of Le Touquet.

- Arras is a lovely old town; don%26#39;t miss the two beautiful main squares.

There is masses to see, depending on your interests.

- Agincourt visitor centre, in the village of Azincourt, near the town of Fruges.

- an excellent modern visitor centre at Guines about the Field of the Cloth of Gold, which took place near here in 1520.

- WWI battlefields around Aubers/Fromelles, to the west of Lille; around Loos-en-Gohelle/Vimy/Notre-Dame-de-Lorette, near Arras and some tunnels called the Wellington Quarry, newly opened in Arras itself; the marvellous Historial de la Grande Guerre museum at Peronne, and the adjacent battlefields and monuments of the Somme around Albert.

- WW2 places at Ambleteuse and Audinghen (on the above-mentioned D940), and also the Memorial du Souvenir museum in Dunkerque, about the Dunkirk evacuation of 1940. A giant blockhouse at Eperlecques, and another blockhouse transformed into a high-tech museum called La Coupole; both near St-Omer.

- Fine-art museums in St Omer, Arras and Amiens.

- more ideas here, together with market days etc
