Fireworks and celebrations on 14 July = Bastille day

We will be staying in the Loire Valley at this time in 2008 and have heard that Blere, Tours and Amboise all have festivities. I would love to hear of experiences at any of these events or any others that anyone can recommend. Thanks

Almost every town and village celebrates Bastille Day in some fashion or other. Our commune celebrates by holding a dance and pig-roast down by the plan d%26#39;eau in a delightful setting. There are fireworks too. Saumur has been our place of choice for the past three years. The crowd gathers on the bridge over the Loire right outside the town, and the anticipation builds until the streetlamps are turned out after dark. Each year, the display has been an improvement on the last. Afterwards, there%26#39;s a carnival atmosphere with many bars hosting groups or acts of some kind. There%26#39;s usually dancing in the large car park by the hotel de ville. The cars aren%26#39;t allowed on! Tours I%26#39;ve heard does a similar thing, as I would imagine Angers, le Mans, Bléré, Amboise do.

Wherever you are, it%26#39;s almost guaranteed that you%26#39;ll see a side of France that%26#39;s hard to beat!

Enjoy!

I watched the Bastille day fireworks in Amboise last year and they really were great. Looking forward to this year.

Tours has the bigger display. It takes place on a small island in the Loire, with the best viewing from Pont Wilson. The bridge is closed to taffic, and is thronged with people. The fireworks start at about 11:30 if my memory serves me correctly. If you are driving, you will need to allow time to park your car, and walk to the bridge.

Amboise also has an excellent display, which again is from a small island in the middle of the Loire, near the main bridge at the foot of the chateau. I prefer to watch it from the north bank of the Loire. You can park your car at the side of the road, and walk down onto the sandbanks almost opposite the chateau. The fireworks and the chateau reflecting in the Loire is a fantastic sight. Again; it starts around 11.30, but to find a parking space you need to be there much earlier. Many families take a picnic supper, and usually at that time of year the level of the Loire is low, so there is a large expanse of sanbanks to sit on.
