Bayeux

We are planning on visiting Normandy for a few days in July. Since we won%26#39;t have a car, we%26#39;re hoping to take the train from Paris and have been told that Bayeux would be a good place to stay. From there we%26#39;ll be taking the Irish Ferry from Cherbourg to Rosslare.

Does anyone have some advice or hints about B%26amp;Bs, restaurants, public transportation, the Irish Ferry, etc.?

Thanks,

Barbara C.

We were in Bayeux a few weeks ago and had a wonderful stay at Hotel de Sainte Croix (www.hotel-de-sainte-croix.com; please see also our review), which, despite its name, is a lovely B%26amp;B; the price for our HUGE and sparkingly clean suite with a HUGE bathroom and a bountiful and beautifully presented breakfast was 73 Euros a night!!! We very much enjoyed our dinners at La Rapiere (traditional Normandy cuisine but with a lighter/less rich touch) and at La Coline d%26#39;Enzo (more contemporary, named after their daughter Coline, whose grandfather%26#39;s name is Enzo). Our host, Mme. Bourdon Fouchenneret, also very cheerfully offered other suggestions -- and actually encouraged us to spend less money on dinners!

We found Bayeux to be small enough for us to get to most places of interest on foot (the cathedral, the Bayeux Tapestry museum, old half-timbered houses, rue Nesmond with the old mill, small and interesting shops including a great hardware store on rue St. Jean that reminded us of one of those we used to know and love in Winchester, MA with its own fabulous kitchen section with copper pots). We didn%26#39;t use it, but there is also a little train that takes you around Bayeux for a small fee. We had a car and were able to access most WWII sites very easily, but I think you will be able to find buses and tours and possibly taxis for hire that can help you if that%26#39;s one of your interests. We got lost a few times and found such kind and patient help from everyone we asked in Bayeux (%26amp; the rest of Normandy for that matter). If you like open-air markets, Bayeux has its big one on Saturday mornings, right across from our bed %26amp; breakfast; the one on Wednesday morning is a smaller one.

We took the train (SNCF) from Paris Saint Lazare to Caen, which took about 2 hours. To go to Bayeux, you would change trains in Caen to pick up another to go to Bayeux, which would add another half hour or so. I think there may be a direct one from Paris to Bayeux, but it runs less frequently. I hope this helps. If you have any other questions, please ask: we ourselves have found lots of help from other TA posters as we plan our travels. Have fun!
