Should we go to the Jewish Museum or Shoah (Holocaust) ?

Has anyone been to either? Is one better than the other, or are neither worth the time?

You should probably go to them both.

I used to go once a week to Hôpital Tenon in the 20 arrondissement to visit a professor of medicine who worked there and wanted to exchange French/English conversation.

I would get off at Métro station Gambetta and walk past the Marie of the 20th and into a park that was a short cut to the hospital. There is a plaque there that I past many times and one day with children running and playing all around me in that park, I stopped to read that plaque. It listed all of the names and the ages of the children that had been taken off to the extermination camps in Germany. The reality of what happened to Jewish families in France came to me like a slap in the face. In some ways it was more profound than many monuments to those horrible events. There are many plaques in France bear witness to someone killed by the Nazis, and I think it helps keep that history alive in hopes that future generations will never forget.

All of these monument are important.

I really think that there should be an edit button on this site so that when I spell Marie like that I can go back and change it to Mairie just to prove that I know how to spell even if I can%26#39;t type.

I can only give a response about the Memorial de la Shoah, which we visited in March. Of course, whether any site is %26quot;worth the time%26quot; is subjective. We found it incredibly moving and emotional. There is much in the exhibits about Jewish life in France and Paris before the Holocaust. The exhibits on the Holocaust itself are chilling, even if one%26#39;s been to other Holocaust museums. There is a wall (in the style of the U.S. Viet Nam Memorial) with names of those who perished. You don%26#39;t need to understand French to follow the exhibits. If you haven%26#39;t yet seen the web site, it is: memorialdelashoah.org, and you can get the site in English by clicking on the British flag in the left column.

The Musee de L%26#39;Armee also has a section related to the Holocaust.

We have been to both. The Jewish Museum had some wonderful exhibits, including a very old original painted sukkah (can%26#39;t remember how old) that was just beautiful. They also had a great exhibit on the Dreyfus Affair when we were there 2 years ago. Not sure if it is still there. The Shoah Memorial was very, very well done as well. We were very impressed. I would recommend both if you have time. They are not far from one another.

When you are near Notre Dame make time to visit the Memomorial to the Deported in the park behind at the end of the Island.

Very moving when you contrast how much we enjoy Paris with the events that have taken place there over the years - particularly if you have some personal background that particularly relates to these events.

Worth taking time to reflect whatever your background.

Looks like I can%26#39;t go wrong. I think I%26#39;m leaning towards The Jewish Museum because I%26#39;m more interested in the pre-war history. I only hesitate because most shoah museums are receiving more fund and evolving into %26quot;THE%26quot; Jewish history museums. We only have one day for marais. We want to see the Pompidou, one of these museums and walk around the area a bit.

Neal, thanks for the reply on the CH forum.

I strongly second Nealrover%26#39;s suggestion of the Memorial de la Déportation behind Notre Dame. There is a nice little park for a short rest. The memorial is quite moving.
