Day trip from Ile de Re to La Rochelle?

Hi there. I%26#39;m spending 4 days on Ile de Re in June and wanted to spend a day in La Rochelle - does anyone know if there are any boats that could take us over for a day%26#39;s shopping/lunching and then return us to the island later on? We will probably have a car, but thought maybe more fun by boat. Thanks!

Hi,

Hope you don%26#39;t mind me replying again! There are boats that go from St Martin, all the times are at

www.inter-iles.com/destination.php…

Most days there is a morning departure and coming back in the afternoon.

They also do trips to Ile d%26#39;Aix - a very small car free island. Unfortunately the two holidays we have had there the weather was too bad to do the boat trip on the days it ran, but friends have told me it is really nice, if you fancy another boat trip.

Of course I don%26#39;t mind you replying - I really appreciate your help - thanks! Any other tips/good advice for when we%26#39;re there? Any good spa%26#39;s for a treatment? Any great restaurants that aren%26#39;t too expensive? I am treating my Mum as my father passed away just a few weeks ago, so want to cheer her up and do some lovely/fun things together.

Do you think we could do La Rochelle in a day?

Thanks again!

Hi Fozzie,

What a nice thing to do for your Mum, I really hope you both enjoy yourselves. Regarding the spa%26#39;s I can%26#39;t help - our 3 year old means that such things are out for me for now!

If you like seafood or fish you will love the restaurants there - many aren%26#39;t too expensive. My husband is a seafood lover and had a big platter every day for lunch, I hate it but loved the fish. (If you don%26#39;t like either all the restaurants have the usual stuff as well). I can%26#39;t remember off hand the names of the ones we went to but will have a look if I can find them - two particularly were very good.

One place to go if you like wine is the Wine Co-operative at Bois Plage - http://www.vigneronsiledere.com/. You can go and taste and buy, it is really very good wine and very cheap. They also make Pineau de Charantes - a very nice aperitif. You can buy it in bottles with a ship painted on it which makes a nice souvenir - about 10 Euros.

I think you could do La Rochelle easily in a day, it is not really a very large town to walk around. The seafood restaurant %26#39;Andre%26#39; at the harbour is very nice - an institution in La Rochelle I believe. We went there once for lunch and it was very good. Cost us about 80 Euros for 2 courses (with the big seafood platter, oysters etc for my husband) with wine. Pricey but a nice treat, especially as we don%26#39;t go out to restaurants at night now. It has a website at http://www.bar-andre.com/ but doesn%26#39;t seem to be working at the moment. However, if that is a bit pricey for you there are lots of cheaper restaurants around the harbour, we have eaten in a couple at random and both were nice.

Hope this is useful, and will try and find the names of the other restaurants for you

Hi both,

I%26#39;m considering the reverse option - a day trip to ile de Re from la Rochelle. Do I need a car to get the best out of Ile de Re for one day, or would it actually be a handicap, in mid-August?

If not by car, how would i get from La Rochelle to Ile de Re?

Many thanks
