9 days in Brittany & Normandie

My wife and I will be spending 9 dayd travelling by car from Amiens to Nantes and wish to see the highlights of the areas. We ahve been to France before but not in this region. Prefer landscape and architecture rather than museums. Also like our food. Suggestions please.

In Brittany you might like the Cote Granite Rose, and Cote Emeraud, as well as Cap Frehel.

South you have Carnac, and all the standing stones, as well as La Belle Isle. The Monts D%26#39;Arree is a pretty area and Roc Trevizel is worth a look.

In Normandy - of course you have all the D-Day beaches, I would recommend Arromanches as being very attractive, espeically if you walk up to the top of the hill where the 360%26#39; Cinema is, you get a fantastic view of the coast and the Mulberry Harbour from there.

The Calvados region has some lovely farmhouses of a particular half-timbered %26#39;Norman%26#39; style.

Cancale is one of THE food places, especially if you like seafoods, especially Oysters (Yum!)

You will find a good selection of these in the area known as %26quot;Suisse Normande%26quot; (Normandy Switzerland), around Thury-Harcourt and Clécy, to the south of Caen, as well as some different landscape (but no mountains).

Nantes is the original capital of Brittany and has been voted one of the best places to live in France - by the French! The landscape around Nantes is quite flat, the Briere national park is an extensive marsh area, with delightdul quiet roads and the opportunity to take dreamy rides amonst the reeds in traditional punts. La Baule on the coast is a busy resort, with one of the best beaches in the world! You need to rember that Brittany is a very large place so I would not plan to visit it all. Stick to the south coast. Vannes is about an hour from Nantes by car. It is at the head of the Gulf du Morbihan a huge ria, with reptdadly 365 islands. Boats trips are available form Vannes, which can also be restaurants. Another hous up the coast and you wil reach Carnac. Famous for the megalithic standing stones, beaches and wonderful sea food. Quiberon is a presqu%26#39;il sticking out into the sea. A superb wild coast on the eastern side, leading to Quiberon town. Return via Auray, great Monday market, and the 17c old quarter with lots of restaurants. Next stop Roche Bernard with great vuies over the river, and you are now back in the route to Nantes. Stop at the botanic gardens in the centre, amble along the Loire amd you have just spent an delightful few days. Next time do the north coast!

For accommodation I suggest Logis de France, not a chain but a group of independently owned and run hotels all covered by both the National Hotel Star grading system and the Logis %26quot;chimney%26quot; classification. We usually go for a minimum 2*, 2 Chimneys. Good value, very different to Chains.

Many Logis have verey good restaurants.

In more rural parts of the region you may find French is not as widely spoken as in more tourisy centres.

There are some good restaurants but don%26#39;t expect every meal to be a gourmet one. In my opinion French cuisine is as variable as any other nations these days and Michelin starred restaurants come at great price! Best sometimes to go where the locals go - simple restaurants with a short menu and a Plat du Jour.

After Amiens you could see Monet%26#39;s house and garden at Giverny near Vernon and Chartres Cathedral before heading towards Rennes and Nantes.

The area NW of Nantes takes you into Brittany - ALL the coast is worth exploring.

Will 9 days be enough?

Have a great trip.
