South Corsico, Bonifiaco

My wife and I plan to spend a week in Corsica in early Sept 2008. We like food, a good hotel, wine , relaxed sight seeing. We plan to hire a car and will arrive via Nice. The posts I have read would suggest Bonifiaco would suit us, we are both in our late 50s. Perhaps we can get some hotel and restaurant suggestions. I am not sure if we should get the ferry or plane from Nice(not checked airline prices). Does anyone know how long it will take to drive from the ferry port to Bonifiaco. I am accustomed to driving in France. The posts I have read would seem to suggest using Bonifiaco as our base. All suggestions would be most welcome.

Tom, it%26#39;s not a difficult drive from the ferry port of Bastia to Bonifacio. Allow about 4-5 hours. Slightly more difficult if you get a ferry to Calvi. However, you could also get a flight from Nice to Figari - Corsica%26#39;s most southerly international airport, and it%26#39;s a very easy drive indeed to Bonifacio from there.

It depends what you want. If you are going to Corsica for the first time, you might prefer to take the ferry and see Corsica from the sea as you approach - always magical.

Bonifacio should suit you fine, though I have always felt that it%26#39;s not the ideal place to use as a base to explore the island. From Propriano or Sartene you could take a look at the west coast, and the mountains of the interior. DTR

There are some great ferry specials with Corsica Ferries that we just took advantage of that would be worth comparing to the airfare. If you were to arrive in Bastia yes easy to drive the coast down to Bonifacio 2.5 hours if the road has not so much traffic. If you go to Bonifacio then easy to drive around the parts of the island, and it is such a beautiful island well worth driving around. We used Porticcio/Ajaccio as our base to drive around the island but not as pretty as Bonifacio.

Hi from Corsica,

Sorry for my baddly english langage. I hope you will undertsand my reply

If you come from Nice you can land in Bastia, Figari, Calvi, Ajaccio. So you can choose the Airport were you want to land.

First what do you prefer to stay : sea or mountains ? The roads in Corsica are difficult to drive ; No highway in Corsica, lots of mountains road. For driving 80 km, its will take by car approximatly 1h 30.

I suggest you some hotels

In the south of Corsica in Bonifacio you can stay at the Hotel Genovese or at 5 km far from Bonifacio you can at the Hotel A Cheda ( splendid hotel and very good restaurant. Dining at Bonifacion : Restaurant A Stella D%26#39;oro ( great dinner ! ) The best in town.

A splendid hotel in Porto Vecchio ( 22 km far from Bonifacio) the Belvedere Hotel with a fabntastic wiew on the Porto Vecchio port and a delicious restaurant in this hotel.

Don%26#39;t forget to go in Zonza ( 1h30 driving from Porto Vecchio) it%26#39;a mountains village. A beautifull wiew - Go to see the Aiguilles de Bavella.

Go to visit the oldest town in Corsica : Sartène ( 1h00 from Porto Vecchio), all my familly lives in this very little medieval town. In Sartène you must go to eat at the Auberge Santa Barbara ( very well known in Corsica for the cooking)

Go to visit Ajaccio, the capital of Corsica and I recommand you to go at this restaurant - The Bilboquet and yo will eat the best lobsters in salsa that you ever eaten. Reservation is suggested.

Ajaccio is far from Sartène 80 km ( 1h30 driving)

After Ajaccio you can go to Cargèse ( 1h30 driving from Ajaccio) a old greece village. 25 km from Cargèse you can go to Piana and you will see the marvellous Calanche of Piana ( Red stones - very strange). After Piana you can go to Calvi ( 2h30 driving) bad road ! but beautifull wiew.

I hope you will spend a good travel

Don%26#39;t hesitate to contact me

Best whishes
