My wife and I are in our early 60s and going to Aix for first time for a week in mid-June. We are staying at le Mozart Hotel and will have a hire car. However we will be looking to eat out in the evenings within walking distance of our hotel so we can have a few drinks without worrying about the car.Hotel is in Cours Gambetta. We would be looking to pay about 100 euros for the two of us for a 2 course dinner with a bottle of wine. Please could I have some recommendations of tried and tested local restaurants. Can you help please?

I%26#39;m not sure how far out the Cours Gambetta your hotel is, but if it%26#39;s close to Cours Mirabeau, you are easy walking distance from anything in the town center. Aix is a very compact and walkable city, provided you are in reasonable physical condition.
We are not exactly foodies, but we did have dinner one night at the cutest restaurant where you sit outside right next to a fountain. It was right around Rue Verrerie and Rue de la Vielle Aumone. There%26#39;s a whole warren of litte streets there, and lots of other restaurants as well. I wish I could remember the name of the one with the fountain. Sorry!
We also loved the Axel Cafe, right on the Place de l%26#39;Hotel de Ville for lunch. It%26#39;s not fancy, but it%26#39;s very inexpensive, and you can%26#39;t beat the location! We ate there almost every day for our month stay in Aix, and became friends with the waiter Thomas (pronounced toe-mah).
Try to avoid taking a car into the town center, if at all possible! We never did, but it sure looked like a nightmare for driving.

Oh, I forgot - if you type %26quot;restaurants%26quot; into the search bar at the top of the Aix forum, you should get lots of good recommendations (better than mine, I%26#39;m sure!).

Thanx keylimejet for that info. No we wouldn%26#39;t dream of taking the hire car into the town centre.

From my calculations you are one mile away from Cours Mirabeau around which there are a wealth of dining options. Were you thinking of walking this sort of distance before and after a meal or taking a taxi?
Although we%26#39;ve never eaten here, this restaurant comes well recommended:

My suggestion would be to ask your hotel to recommend something closer. Alternatively drive out of town where the options are varied and cheaper.
We, of a similar age, visited Aix for the first time in July 06 for the Festival and didn%26#39;t experience any problems with the driving or parking.

I would have a meal at the 2 Garcons if I were you, it%26#39;s where Cezanne and Zola used to hang out.
