I have been lurking on these boards researching my vacation to Paris, which is in a month. My boyfriend I shall be staying in the 19th arrondissement for one week with a relative. I know this neighborhood is not central and wanted to know which metro passes would be our best bet. We are from New York and are used to lots of walking, should we get the Paris Visite pass for 5 days or a carnet of 10 tickets? We%26#39;d definitely be using the metro to quickly get to the central areas and stroll around from there. I guess I am just not sure how much we will be using public transport. We will also be going to Versailles on one of our days and if we got the Paris Visite pass, would we then just buy advanced tickets to Versailles and not the package that includes the train tickets? I should be able to decipher a subway map by now but this system looks more complex than ours.

DETAILS MATTER when deciding which of the several Ticket and/or transportation pass alternatives will suit your proposed itinerary and %26#39;work%26#39; best for you.
WHEN (what days of the week) will you arrive in and depart from Paris ?? CARNET (packets of 10 reduced-price individula Tickets) MOBILIS, CARTE ORANGE, PARIS VISITE transportation passes or depending on itinerary combinations of the afore...all may--or may not--suit your purpose....depending on itinerary, some better%26#39;n others. Do you plan to use the RER train or Roissybus airport transfer options ??...in a ddition to Versailles, do you have anyother daytrips out of Paris planned during your visit??
If you know the NYC subway system, the Paris Metro system will be a snap by comparison.

Hi Sushimonster
Don%26#39;t get a Paris Visite Pass. It%26#39;s too expensive. We stayed out at Pantin beyond the 19th a couple of year ago and had no problems using the metro. There is a weekly ticket you can buy call the carte orange. It%26#39;s being replaced by the navigo ( do a search on this forum and you will find an excellent explaination by one of the Paris experts)
Being in the 19th we used lots of public transport, RER, buses and metro. The carte orange was the most useful. (it%26#39;s still being sold but this may be change by the time you arrive)
Versailles is in the 5th zone and I would recommend buying a train ticket that goes to the 5th and a tour just to avoid the lines.
The system is no more complex than NY (which I still cannot understand) so you should have no problems.
Enjoy

thank you. i thought the carte orange was good for only monday-sunday? we will be there wednesday-tuesday.

True it is only Mon to sun, Maybe look at Paris Viste for 2 days (Wed %26amp; Thurs) zones 1-5 covers CDG and versailles E27.50 each. (but not enterance tickets to verailles) then carnet for the rest of your visit. We tend to use the metro and buses quite a bit so a carnet is used up quickly, but if you plan your trips it can be cost effective. I find the convenience of a cover all ticket the best.
We are in Paris at the moment after a week in NY. If you can manage the subway you will have no problems with the metro. It%26#39;s soooo easy. (We speak English but no French) Go figure. Just enyoy the trip.
PS I%26#39;d love to have a relative in the 19th!!
