Hi. My partner and I are due to spend 5 days in the region - spending 2 nights in Carcassonne and the rest of the time taking pot luck!. We enjoy walking and scenery and widlife (birdwatching)or anywhere that is particularly interesting. Can anyone recommend where we could spend the other 3 days/nights preferably with restaurants and a bar or two. Many Thanks

Castres is a pleasant small town

they have occasional antique/brocante markets.
Albi is an interesting City

with an unusual Cathederal (with a very lurid %26#39;last judgement%26#39; mural) and the Henri de Tolouse Lautrec museum.
Lautrec village is not too far away, is very pretty and might be a good base for some walking.

Dear Veagas123,
a must walk for you and your partner if you love a challenge is to walk to Lac De La Cavayere which is a couple of hours from La Cite in Carcassonne. It is well worth the effort. Although it is an artificial lake it%26#39;s lovely for a pinic on one of it%26#39;s three beaches.
Have a lovely week, Bob.

Well you%26#39;ve got the Montagne Noir to the North, the Corbieres to the South and East and the Minervois to the North East. Take your pick. Most villages have a restaurant and a bar or two. If you want something bigger than a village try Lagrasse or Mirepoix.
You could consider Domaine La Royale near Villardonnel. Bar in the village and only 20 minutes by car from Carcassonne. Beautifull scenery, great walks and a variety of birds to %26quot;watch
