We wanted to do a 1/2 day tour and the only company offering this (Overlord) say they are full. Is there another company that does a 1/2 day tour, or can we do our own (we have a car) and what should we be sure to see? We will be staying in Bayeux.

in fact Overlord advertise half-day tours but they don%26#39;t do them ! the only company offering half days is Normandy Sightseeing Tours : www.normandywebguide.com
where are you staying in Bayeux ?

My brother did a tour over a year ago with a guide named Jean-Marc Bacon, an English-speaking Frenchman whom my brother seemed pleased with.
I searched and found his site, and it appears the tour runs from 8:15 to 1 p.m. -- advertised as 4-5 hours. Seems like a half-day to me.

I decided to go with Battlebus on my recent visit because it seemed a little more in-depth and longer -- and because of the overwhelming raving on this board. But my brother said it was an excellent tour.

Thanks for the suggestions. We are staying at the Hotel Tardif www.au-chateau.com/Tardif.htm

Good choice ! Battlebus is very populair so you%26#39;d better contact them as quick as you can. Tardif sounds great !
it seems you%26#39;ll have a good time in Normandy ! enjoy !

I just thought I%26#39;d add that Victory Tours does a 1/2 day tour. We haven%26#39;t gone yet but booked one for June 4th.
Anyone had any experiences with them?

Guests of ours just did a tour with normandy-landing-tours.com and were moer than happy. There were 5 of them so they did a private tour with the guide in their car for 190 euros. However, the company also does half dya tours for 45 euros per person.

Fat Tire Bike Tours is doing a one day tour from Bayeux. They use vans for this tour.

I spent two days touring all five d day beaches last month. If you can only do a half day tour, I would reccomend trying to find one that included Omaha beach, the batteries at Longues and point du hoc. These are in relatively close proximity to each other. Battery at Longues is the only place I saw that had bunkers with the oriional german guns still in place. An awesome sight. Point du hoc was where the rangers scaled the cliffs and the huge bomb craters are still there. I would leave Omaha beach for last because this will be the most time consuming.
Good luck!

Is there a book that we could buy to do a tour on our own as we have a 5 year old. He is great in the car and thought there might be something that would describe what we are looking at and where we are systemmatically around the coast.

To Sharon,
I have a book I left at work which I%26#39;ll hopefully remember to jot down the name and title to and pass that info on tomorrow. It%26#39;s a very good book about d day with lots of pictures your 5 year old I%26#39;m sure would love. It doesn%26#39;t really list them in an order you would want to visit them in though. If your time is limited, I would try and visit the 3 places I mentioned in my earlier posting.
Keep in mind the d day beaches span a section of coast about 55 miles long with only smaller roads connecting them. If you have enough time to visit several sites, I could give you a recommended order from the Pegasus bridge and the nearby battery in the east to Utah beach in the west. Just let me know.
