Car journey Grenoble to Zermatt

Hello. My partner and I are heading to France in July and are hiring a car. We are wondering the best route to get from the Grenoble Area to Zermatt. We were wondering what the road from Albertville to Chamonix Mt Blanc is like or would it be better to go via Annecy?

We are also interested in any comments regarding the road from Chamonix to Martigny.

Thanks for your help!

Probably the fastest way is by motorway from Grenoble up to Geneva and then around the lake towards Martigny and on. However, the distance is much further and it is more expensive - you need a Swiss motorway %26#39;vignette%26#39; (SF40) to travel on any Swiss motorways.

It%26#39;s much shorter to go from Albertville to Chamonix and then over to Martigny and onwards as you said if you can take your time. The roads are fine - lots of bends of course, but not too narrow and should not be too full of trucks. Pick your time carefully, if possible don%26#39;t travel on a Saturday in July when holidaymakers fill the roads.

Thank you for your speedy reply. We are travelling on a Thursday. Any idea of how long the journey through Chamonix would take? We are in no hurry, but just a general idea would be great.

I had a very quick look on www.viamichelin.com where you can do itineraries anywhere in Europe. It came up with the one via Geneva as recommended and stated 4 hours 20 minutes. Then I asked for the shortest route and it came up with the one via Chamonix and it stated 5 hours using Motorways on both French and Swiss sides ... if you avoid the motorway on the Swiss side, I would reckon on 6 hours without stops.

Thanks again. We will check out that website too as it sounds like it could answer many of our questions. Can%26#39;t wait for our trip!
