cell phones in France

We are leaving in a week for a 3-week tour around France and Belgium. We will need to rent a cell phone while there. Has anyone done this and if so, where did you pick it up? Can I get one in CDG airport upon arrival? Any help is very appreciated. We are travelling from Canada, and most of the on-line rental services out of the US do not deliver to Canada.

Strong suggestion - read the threads on this forum about cell phone rental before jumping into that (do a search in the box at the top of the column to the left of the forum posts). There have been some okay experiences, but some extremely negative ones that you will want to know about.

I highly recommend you avoid telephone vendors renting phones from the airport. This forum is full of posts by others who have and later regretted it.

If your Canadian provider does not use a GSM network, the best alternative to renting is to purchase a used 4 band GSM phone on eBay. They can be purchased for as little as $25-$40. Phone cards (sims) can be purchased in France from a variety of vendors with a host of different plans, again at rates far below what many rented cells phones vendors charge.
