Museum Pass or Not

This will be our 2nd trip to Paris in 3 yars. Last time we did the major museums, but will visit more, don%26#39;t know which ones yet (Ste. Chappelle, Le Orangerie) Notre Dame, the Sewer Museum and any along the way). How long are the museum lines in mid May? We will be staying 4 days. Don%26#39;t want to spend all the money, but if the lines are too long might be worth it.

Lines are not THAT long. You have to pick the right time to go (opening time or end of day).

I am always amazed to see how little patience some people have to enter a museum but then they will wait in line 20 minutes for ice cream at Berthillon!

You can get individual tickets at the FNAC. At least for some of the museums.

Get a Pariscope at newstand and check hours for museums. Then go 15 minutes before opening or 2 hours before closing. That%26#39;s enough for Orangerie for example.

A 2 day museum pass is 30 Euros, you can pack all your museums in that time too.

I second the suggestion to get the museum pass. You could economize by deciding to concentrate your museum-going into 2 days, or just spring for the 15 more euros a 4-day pass costs, thus giving yourself full freedom to pop into any covered museum or attraction that strikes your fancy, without having to plan your days too minutely. I recently bought a 4-day pass for a 5-day stay in Paris, and I found that it encouraged me to go to places like the Pantheon that I might not otherwise have shelled out money for. The pass would also give you encouragement to pop back into, say, the Louvre to see a new part of the museum. And, as a Mainer not nearly as tolerant of waiting in lines as city-dwellers seem to be, I consider it money well spent to be able to go to the head of a line, even if, technically, I don%26#39;t end up getting -- euro for euro -- full value from my Museum Pass!

I bought a museum pass on each of my last two trips and did not use it. The first one I brought home intending to use but mislaid it and the second I gave to a friend because I kept putting off using it because the 4 days have to be consecutive and I had other plans for some of the days. I agree with La Photographe and unless you want to hang out in the museums it covers a lot each day on consecutive days, just wait in line.

A museum pass makes sense if you set aside 2 consecutive days to do nothing but museums. However, check a guide book to make sure which museums are NOT included...The Monet museum, for instance, is not.

|||

Nor is the Eiffel Tower although a lot of people assume it is and that has one of the longest lines you will come across.

Absolutely get the museum pass; it takes off all the pressure to do everything at one time. If you%26#39;ve skipped the Rodin museum in the past, please go this time; it was my favorite. Our hotel was 2 blocks away and I went every day just to stroll in the gardens.

For my upcoming trip, I have 2 free afternoons (Tuedsay, Wednesday) while spouse is at business meetings. I want to go to Musee d%26#39;Orsay one afternoon and Orangerie the next. Last time I tried d%26#39;Orsay in the morning the lines were 2 hours long so I went to Cluny again and lucked into othe nice Firday concert.

The 2-day pass is 30 euros and I can get one at my hotel. It%26#39;s not a cost savings for just the 2 museums...but are the lines long at, say 1 PM or 2 PM? If they are, it may be worth the cost to have more time inside as opposed to in line.

Thanks.

The Louvre and d%26#39;Orsay had separate pass entrances, many of the rest do not- and every place has some sort of queue for a security check. In May, we found all moved quickly.

Even with a quick-moving line, without the pass, in some places you would also need to stand in line for the ticket counters themselves. With the pass, once you clear security, you are good to go.

By the way, we found the sewer museum fascinating.

plantlady,

We got the 6 day pass for our stay last month. I posted a trip report on our Museum Marathon with a comment on each of the 16 museums we visited. You might like to look at the report. Some of the museums are small and have no lines, yet are really lovely and different. Being able to revisit is great and jumping the lines at some of the museums was nice. Have a great trip.
