I%26#39;m planning my first trip to france with my boyfriend, we are thinking of going to the Ardeche because there seems to be loads to do and see here but we don%26#39;t know where to base ourselves. We don%26#39;t want to stay anywhere that%26#39;s too quite! We are going for ten days and are hiring a car, any advice would be great. Thanks alot.

I think the main centre that comes to mind is Vallon Pont d%26#39;Arc, which has lots of campsites and other accommodation during the season, though I don%26#39;t know how you%26#39;d rate it for social life. The main interest is outdoor activities, particularly the long canoe trip down the Gorges de l%26#39;Ardèche, and the scenic (read: scary) drive along the cliff road towards the Rhone.
We stayed there once, quite a long time ago and had a few sightseeing trips as well - the Aven d%26#39;Orgnac and the Pont du Gard and other parts of Provence are all within reach, but not on the doorstep.
I seem to remember evening entertainment put on by the campsite where we stayed, but it was low-key - local musician playing in the bar while clients sat out in the warm evening type of thing. If you%26#39;re flying into Nimes and wanting lively nightlife, you might be better posting on the Languedoc Roussillon forum, asking for recommendations.
The tourist information website, with accommodation lists, is on http://www.vallon-pont-darc.com/ I can%26#39;t get the English translation to work :-(
