We%26#39;ll be heading from Aix to Villefranche on a Saturday in July. We were originally planning on taking the train, but having discovered that the earliest train that day leaves at 10:30 AM and wouldn%26#39;t put us in VSM until almost 2:30 PM, so we%26#39;re now considering renting a car as we%26#39;d like to get there in the morning - it%26#39;s only a 5-day trip, and we don%26#39;t want to waste the better part of a day just trying to get there!
My question is, would this really save time? Google Maps says it%26#39;s about a 1.5 hour ride, but is the traffic liable to be awful? We%26#39;d plan on leaving at 8 or 9 AM. Thanks!

Plan on a good two hours%26#39; driving time; if you leave early in the morning you shouldn%26#39;t, with luck, have many delays--but avoid the coastal road.

Have you thought about taking the express bus instead?
There seems to be a fast bus which leaves Aix en Provence for Nice at 9am. Takes around 2 hours 20 minutes to the Nice bus station and it%26#39;s easy to get to Villefranche from there

Hope this helps

Thanks to you both. I hadn%26#39;t thought of the bus; we%26#39;ll look into both options a bit more.
