Notre Dame Beach, Ile de Porquerolles

Hi there. We are heading to France in July and have been reading some books about the areas we will visit. Have found some information on this beach - it says you can hire bikes and bike around the island, and that Notre Dame beach is a lovely spot. Has anyone been there? Is it worth a trip to have a look,or to simply relax on a beach? Where is the best place to get the ferry from?

Thanks

Yes I have been there many times. It is one of my favourite beaches. It is about 3kms from the main town where the ferries dock. So you can either walk or rent bikes. There is nothing at the beach by way of restaurants or places to buy food %26amp; drink so be sure to take what you want with you. It is a very popular bay for boats to moor.

The other main beach is Plage d%26#39;Argent in the other direction but it is more commercialised with a restaurant and snack bar so I prefer the naturalness of Notre Dame.

I have included a link for you. From that link you can get details of the ferries. They go from vaious places along the coast.

I hope you enjoy it.

Hi,

Been to Porquerolles as well as nearby Port-Cros many times, as I live an hour away.

I love these islands: Porquerolles for its laid-back tropical feel, its many paths around the island, its beaches. It%26#39;s true that you can rent bikes and tour the island on them; no cars are allowed outside of those for locals who require them for work; you%26#39;ll find many people scouting the island on bikes (i prefer to walk as there are some spots not accessible to bikes, but i%26#39;m a hiker anyway). The only drawback is that it gets busy in the summer. You can find a few pictures of Porquerolles on our web site, including some of Plage Notre-Dame, one of the longest beaches on the island and a wonderful one (check out the views from Pointe du Pin before it). There are also a couple of nice restaurants for the gourmets among us.

Port-Cros is entirely protected: no cars, no bikes, no fishing. It%26#39;s a hiker%26#39;s paradise. Few beaches though, so it depends what you%26#39;re after.

Definitely worth a trip if you%26#39;re in the area.

For ferry boat access, check out TLV Transports www.tlv-tvm.com and Vedettes des Iles d%26#39;Or www.vedettesilesdor.fr. It%26#39;s easy to catch the ferry from Le Lavandou.

Enjoy!

Porquerolles is my favourite place in the world, so definitely worth a visit, however I don%26#39;t think Notre Dame beach is a patch on Plage d%26#39;Argent, and what%26#39;s more Notre Dame is a lot further from the port. I went to Notre Dame last September cos it was recommended by my guide book (lonely planet) and was very disappointed. Notre Dame is narrow and there are pebbles. Plage d%26#39;Argent on the other hand is only about 25 minutes%26#39; walk, and has lovely white sand and pine trees down to the beach.

You get the ferry to Porquerolles from Tour Fondue, at the end of the Giens peninsula. There are several buses a day down there and in holiday season, a ferry every half hour or so as I remember. The journey is 20-30 minutes. To get to the other islands is a longer journey.

There are no cars on the island but there is a large car park at Tour Fondue. When you get to the island, you can walk or hire a bicyle. I think most people walk. There are a few shops and restaurants and even a couple of hotels.

Do go, it%26#39;s great!

CC and I will never agree on beaches but as you are going in July you will find Plage d%26#39;Argent extremely busy as it is closer to the town. Not everybody likes a long walk or a cycle ride. However even in August you will find masses of space at Notre Dame. It is a narrow beach with the pines tress coming right down to the beach but it is a long horse-shoe shape so as I said room for everybody. By the way it is a sandy beach as well. As it shelves gently the sea is an amazing colour there.

Thank you all for your help. It sounds exactly what we are looking for as we have done the trip with the %26#39;big sights%26#39; before and looking a little more off the beaten track this time. Although we are cyclists, a walk around this island sounds perfect!! Thanks

Oh! Thank you very much for the initial question about Porquerolles and all of the helpful responses. My family is heading to France :) in June and will visit friends in Hyere for one week. My daughter really wants to spend time on the beach and snorkeling. Again, Thank you for your information. I may have a few questions myself and will post them this week. Merci Beacoup
