Hi, We are flying into Marseille next week for 5 nights. We stayed in Marseille on our last visit but would like to see more of the countryside and towns of Provence. Should we hire a car from the airport or use public transport? I have been looking on the forum regards recommendations but havinhg problems in deciding where and what!
We are thinking we would maybe like to visit Arles / St Remy de Provence / Avignon and the surrounding villages of Carpentras, Gordes %26amp; Rousillon/ L%26#39;Isle sur la Sorgue/ Aix-en-Provence / and lastly Cassis. Is all this possible? Where should we base ourselves or should we move on and stay in several locations. Any help would be most welcome. Thanks!

yes absolutely, hire a car at the airport and spend your nights at the same place, so you don%26#39;t have to pack everyday. What you want to see is easily reachable from one or the other location you will choose. Have a look for hotels and B%26amp;B on :

Sounds like you%26#39;ve got a good rough plan in mind. Sure it%26#39;s possible. It isn%26#39;t a huge area to cover; there%26#39;s just lots to do and see. With all the places you want to go, you should get a car. You can use viamichelin.com or mappy.fr to play with routes and get estimated driving times.
Whether you have one base or move around a bit depends on how you like to travel. If like us you prefer to minimize backtracking, you might get a room for part of the time around St. Remy or Avignon, move on to the Luberon around Gordes or Rousillon, and spend the last night in Cassis.

You%26#39;ll see more places quickly if you hire a car, the transport is infrequent in that area. I would base myself somewhere small and quiet, maybe l%26#39;Isle, Carpentras or St Remy as they are central. For the places you want to visit I think one location would be best.

You shouldn%26#39;t stay in one place! You%26#39;ll miss all the nice spring-evening energy in the different cities! It%26#39;s so nice now to travel around because all the main tourist villages are quiet and you can finally see why the became so popular. (there just beautifull). All the hotels are cheap now and available because the french do not have their hollidays. There%26#39;s no need to make reservations! Pack light and get on the road! And just enjoy the small cosy hotel-rooms in the centre of the cities.(don%26#39;t expect to much luxury) Go and visit Arles and St Remy but go in the day-time because those towns are really small and at night it%26#39;s completely empty so you%26#39;d better not spend the night their if you want to walk around town in the evening. Don%26#39;t forget Montpellier it%26#39;s a really nice town in springtime, Avignon, and also in day-time Sainte Marie de la Mer and take a trip to the Camarque. And buy a detailed map in France, it takes you around the small beautifull country roads. all the roads are numbered so it%26#39;s not that hard to find your way around.

Thank you to everyone for the most helpful advice. I think we%26#39;ll just hire a car and take off around the suggested areas stopping wherever the notion takes us. It%26#39;s good to know we don%26#39;t need to make hotel reservations, allowing us a lot more freedom! We are now really looking forward to our visit. Thanks again.
