Hi
Too much to see and too little time; moreover May is a peak season and queue at most sights are expected to be long. Depends on what both of you like actually.
I would suggest as a 1st time visitor, try to cover the following attractions (not in preferential order though):
1 The Lourve
During the day - make sure you be there early to avoid those tour groups;you can buy ticket online
During the night - worth to drop by to admire how magnificent The Lourve is at night
2 Notre Dame and the area around Ile de la Cite
3 Eiffel Tower (be there early to beat the queue); evening view from Tracedaro is stunning and Eiffel is awesome when lit up at night.
4 Arc de Triomphe - Climb up to the top if you have the time - day and night which gives you stunning view of Paris.
5 Walk from Place de la Concorde and stroll along Champs-Elysees and right all the way to Arc de Triomphe (I love this stretch of the road).
6 Seine River cruise (both day and night).
7 Montmartre vicinity and Sacre Coeur (the view of Paris city from the Basilica at dusk is stunning).
8 Museum D%26#39;Orsay
9 Centre Georges Pompidou
10 Tuileries Garden and Jardin du Luxembourg
Daytrip (due to your limited time)
1 Chateau de Versailles
2 Giverny (Claude Monet garden)
My advice would be to relax and do not pack your itineraries. I have visited Paris 3 times and yet discovered something new each visit. Eg I have not complete my visit at The Lourve and hopefully can do that in the future.
There are many areas which I did not list here as I do not think you both will have sufficient time to cover. Eg I love Latin Quarter; just love the atmosphere there (esp around Patheon); oh and also Opera Garnier, just love the architecture.
If you like something artistic, Claude Monet is a must visit esp that the attraction is only opened at certain months of the year. There are day tour leaving Paris though I went there on my own actually.
I would advise you to do some research on the internet on these places. It would help you a great deal in planning, prioritise your itinerary and also what to expect to see.
There may be other sights which I have missed and I am sure other members will be able to enlighten you.
Enjoy your holiday. The keyword is to relax and enjoy the beauty of this romantic city.

Dear bakemachine
I%26#39;m not sure wether you are asking for suggestions for day trips from Paris or just places to see in Paris generally.
Your trip is quite short 6 days, so the obvious day trip would be to Versailles, which is just a ride away on th RER.
Hippo 388 has given you a good list of popular sights to see.
You do not tell us where you are staying or what your interests are.
When we were new we would go to a new area or arrondisement each day and using a good guide book and map we would wander around that particular area.
For instance 1st Arrondisement you could visit the Madeline church, Opera Garnier, the large shops nearbye, Galleries Lafayette and Printemps, and then walk down rue de la Paix, (looking in all the fancy jewellry shops on the way) to Place Vendome to see the Ritz, and then along rue St Honore (looking at all the designer shops) to rue Royale to Place de la Concorde. The Tuilleries gardens and the Louvre are also in this area.
Another day you could go to the 6th arrondissement and see Notre Dame, St Chapelle, The St Germaine area Musee D%26#39;orsay, Wander around sit in cafes drink coffee and people watch.
Another day you could go to the 7th and visit the Eiffel tower, rue cler, Les Invallides, Rodin Garden, again sit in cafes and people watch, soak in the atmosphere.
In the 5th arrondisement is the Luxemberg gardens, the Pantheon, St Ettienne du Mont rue Mouffetard market, Mosque, jardin des Plantes Shakespere and company bookshop. and lots of little streets to wander.
I%26#39;m not saying visit ALL these things but if you have a list of each area you can enjoy Paris and not rush from one %26quot;sight to another%26quot;
A stroll up the Champs Elysees to the Arc de Triompe or a boat trip on the Seine could be an evening adventure.
Using your guide book and this forum you can research each arrondisement or area.
Take good walking shoes, take your time and enjoy.

I would recommend you get a museum pass that can be bought all over Paris and will allow you access to most of the popular sights and some you might not think of without the pass. If you google Paris Museum Pass it will give full details. I also recommend Versailles as your day trip as it is very close to Paris and a must see. Versailles is included on the Museum Pass.
