Hello! My husband and I are leaving Paris on a Sunday eve for Bayeux and have hotel reservations at the Hotel Churchill for 1 night. We are doing the battlebus tour on Monday then heading back to Paris Monday eve. Would it be worthwhile to rent a car from paris, or would it be better to take the train round trip? Any advice would be much appreciated!

Bayeux is not a very large town; you can walk to most touristic sites, although it doesn%26#39;t look like you will have much time for Bayeux. I assume that the touring company will provide you with transportation the next day, so renting the car would not make much sense financially or logistically for either day. It does look like given your itinerary and focus, taking the train round-trip from Paris would make more sense, with perhaps a few taxi rides to and from the train station if you have a lot of luggage. Have a great trip!

Thank you so much! That is quite helpful. I think a train would be best too...

I spent 8 days in France earlier this month with the last 2 being in Paris. I have no idea how these people find there way around. It%26#39;s fairly easy to navigate outside the big cities but I got lost a couple of times in some of their smaller cities. They have an awful lot of what we call rotaries and the signs at these rotaries direct you to other towns or hotels or famous buildings. The actual street signs are few and far between. So I definitely would advise against driving in Paris.

Blondie, may I ask what train it is that you are taking? I keep reading that there is a train, but when I check the sncf.co.uk site, there is no Bayeux destination. It only shows Caen. I am finding the train system to be very confusing so far. :-(

You can try RailEurope.com and have the tickets mailed to you. We bought buy our tickets between Paris/Saint Lazare and Bayeux (via Caen) that way and also between Rouen and back to Paris/Saint Lazare; it is probably more expensive this way but we got more things done ahead of time that way. If you want to browse, www.voyages-sncf.com can give some ideas of your options and you can then buy those tickets once you get there. Good luck!

I%26#39;m quite sure to get to Bayeaux from Paris/Saint Lazare, you have to change trains in Caen.

I can see Caen...but there is no option to select Bayeux...so if I want to go on...or change trains even (if that is what I have to do), then where do I see the second leg? Surely there is a way to see the schedule for this connection, and purchase a fare?
That voyages site is French...and I don%26#39;t see any conversion link. ??

If you use the voyages-sncf site you type in the towns yourself, you don%26#39;t select from a list. If you type in Paris St Lazare as departure and Bayeux as destination several options come up and occasionally there are direct trains where you do not need to change at Caen. For example, today there is a train departing Paris 1043, arriving Bayeux 1246, no change necessary.

Thank you. The voyages site is French and clicking on the English flag simply sends you to a TGV site, which then sends you to Rail Europe - so it%26#39;s a bit confusing to navigate. However I did find a very good site - bounjourlafrance.net - that has a complete explanation of all the train staions, with route maps and schedules. Exactly what I needed as this clarified a great deal for me.
And also thanks for the explanation of the stop in Caen - that was not made clear in any of the other posts that I%26#39;ve read...now it makes sense, especially after viewing the train schedule.
This is a great help. Now I have lots of work to do to decide our plans! :-)
